Christmas Frosty Reindeer Beanie

 

 

Hello my fellow knitters! Get ready to cast on something truly charming! This beanie features a playful parade of little reindeer worked in stranded colorwork, inspired by a hand-drawn chart and finished with a big, cozy pom-pom. I've knitted it in three sizes so that it fits all family. This pattern is beginner-friendly, fun to follow, and full of personality. Gather your yarn, settle in, and let’s bring these adorable woodland friends to life stitch by stitch!

Materials:

  • Suggested yarn: Alize Burcum Classic, (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz (100 g), 230 yards (210 m):
    • 2-3 yearsone skein each of Dark Grey (196) (referred to as color A), White (55), White (55), nutmeg (408), and Dark Brown (493).
    • 4-6 years: one skein each of Light grey (208) (referred to as color A), White (55), Red (106), Brown (239), and Dark Brown (493).
    • 7-10 yearsone skein each of Light grey (208) (referred to as color A), White (55), Red (106), Powder Pink (161), and Dark Brown (493).
  • Circular knitting needles, 16" (40 cm) long, sizes US 7 (4.5 mm) and US 8 (5 mm).
  • Double pointed needles (DPNs) set, size US 8 (5 mm).
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Ring stitch marker.
  • Beads: (7, 8black 0.16" (4 mm), (7, 8) red 0.2" (5 mm), (7, 8) yellow 0.3" (8 mm).


Size 4-6 years
 


Sizes and measurements:
  • 2-3 years: head circumference = 19" - 19.7" (48 - 50 cm).
  • 4-6 years: head circumference = 19.7" - 20.5" (50 - 52 cm).
  • 7-10 yearshead circumference = 20.5" - 21.25" (52 - 54 cm).

Gauge: 17 sts and 22 rounds = 4"x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch and US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles.

Yardage: 

  • 2-3 years120 - 125 yards (110 - 115 m), approx.
  • 4-6 years140 - 130 yards (130 - 135 m), approx.
  • 7-10 years170 - 175 yards (155 - 160 m), approx.
Knitting Terms:
  • st: stitch.
  • sts: stitches.
  • k: knit.
  • p: purl.
  • k2tog: knit two stitches together.


Size 2-3 years


Instructions:

With color (A) yarn and circular knitting needles US 7 (4.5 mm), cast on 72 (84, 96) sts. Join in the round. Don't know how to join in the round? here is a short tutorial on how to do it (from 0:26 - 1:15 min):

Put a ring stitch marker at the beginning of rounds, work as follows:

Rib round: k 1, p 1, repeat to end.

Repeat the rib round (6, 7) more times. Cut yarn (A), bind on White yarn and repeat rib round twice. Change to circular knitting needles size US 8 (5 mm) and work the pattern as shown in the chart, cut off all color yarn. 

With yarn (A), knit (8, 10) rounds.

Decreasing rounds:

Round 1: k2tog, k 10 sts, repeat to end. [66 (77, 88sts]

Rounds 2, 4, 6, 8: k to end.

Round 3: k2tog, k 9, repeat to end. [60 (70, 80sts]

Round 5: k2tog, k 8, repeat to end[54 (63, 72sts]

Round 7: k2tog, k 7, repeat to end[48 (54, 64sts]

Note: change to DPNs when needed.

For size 2-3 years:

Round 9: k2tog, k 6, repeat to end. (42 sts)

Round 10: k2tog, k 5, repeat to end. (36 sts)

Round 11: k2tog, k 4, repeat to end. (30 sts)

Round 12: k2tog, k 3, repeat to end. (24 sts)

Round 13: k2tog, repeat to end. (12 sts)

For size 4-6 years:

Round 9: k2tog, k 6, repeat to end. (49 sts)

Round 10: k to end.

Round 11: k2tog, k 5, repeat to end. (42 sts)

Round 12: k2tog, k 4, repeat to end. (35 sts)

Round 13: k2tog, k 3, repeat to end. (28 sts)

Round 14: k2tog, repeat to end. (14 sts)

For size 7-10 years:

Round 9: k2tog, k 6, repeat to end. (56 sts)

Round 10: k to end.

Round 11: k2tog, k 5, repeat to end. (48 sts)

Round 12: k to end.

Round 13: k2tog, k 4, repeat to end. (40 sts)

Round 14: k2tog, k 3, repeat to end. (32 sts)

Round 15: k2tog, k 2, repeat to end. (24 sts)

Round 16: k2tog, k 1, repeat to end. (16 sts)

Round 17: k2tog, repeat to end. (8 sts)

For all sizes: cut the yarn, leaving a 6" (15 cm) tail. Thread the tail through all stitches, pull tight to close, and secure. Weave in the loose ends.

Sew the black, red and yellow beads as shown in the video. 

With any two yarn that you've used, make a 3" (7.5 cm) pom-pom and attach it securely to the top of the hat. Steam well.

Knitting Terms:

  • k2tog: knit two stitches together.


Instructions:

With black yarn and circular knitting needles US 7 (4.5 mm), cast on 77 (88, 99) sts. Join in the round. Don't know how to join in the round? here is a short tutorial on how to do it (from 0:26 - 1:15 min):

Put a ring stitch marker at the beginning of rounds, work as follows:

Rib round: k 1, p 1, repeat to end. 

Repeat rib round (79) more times, change to circular knitting needles US 8 (5 mm) while knitting next round. Knit (45) more rounds. Work the pattern using yarn in suitable colors. With the purple yarn knit (45) rounds.



Decreasing rounds:

Round 1: k2tog, k 9, repeat to end. [70 (8090) sts]

Round 2: k to end.

Round 3: k2tog, k 8, repeat to end. [63 (7281) sts]

Round 4: k to end.

Round 5: k2tog, k 7, repeat to end. [56 (6472) sts]

Round 6: k to end.

Round 7: k2tog, k 6, repeat to end. [49 (5663) sts]

Round 8: k to end.

Note: change to DPNs when needed.

8/10 years size:

Round 9: k2tog, 5, repeat to end. (42 sts)

Round 10: k2tog, k 4, repeat to end. (35 sts)

Round 11: k2tog, k 3, repeat to end. (28 sts)

Rounds 12-13: k2tog, repeat to end. (7 sts)

11/13 years size:

Round 9: k2tog, k 6, repeat to end. (48 sts)

Round 10: k2tog, k 5, repeat to end. (40 sts)

Round 11: k2tog, k 4, repeat to end. (32 sts)

Round 12: k2tog, k 3, repeat to end. (24 sts)

Rounds 13-14: k2tog, repeat to end. (8 sts)

Adult size:

Round 9: k2tog, k 6, repeat to end. (54 sts)

Round 10: k2tog, k 5, repeat to end. (45 sts)

Round 11: k2tog, k 4, repeat to end. (36 sts)

Round 12: k2tog, k 3, repeat to end. (27 sts)

Round 13: k2tog, k 2, repeat to end. (18 sts)

Round 14: k2tog, repeat to end. (9 sts)

For all sizes, cut the yarn, leaving a 6" (15 cm) tail. Pull the tail through all stitches, draw it tight to close. Weave in the loose ends.

For each braid, cut six 6" (15 cm) strands, and insert them where it shows in the chart, then braid them and trim the ends.
