Frosty Friends Hat

 

Hello my fellow knitters! Let's bring a little winter magic to your wardrobe with this playful hat! Featuring rows of smiling snowmen with bright carrot noses and happy expressions, this beanie is the perfect way to add fun and coziness to the cold season, and these playful details bring so much personality to the design. It’s one of those projects that makes you smile as you knit, and even more once you see it finished. I am really glad the pictures I took with my niece turned out as great as they did, showcasing the stunning contrast of colors. 

Whether you’re knitting it for your little ones, or as a thoughtful holiday gift, this design is sure to spread joy and keep everyone toasty through frosty days. I had so much fun creating it, and instantly became one of my favorite winter knits. Perfect for snowy days, holiday outings, or simply spreading a little winter cheer, this hat is sure to warm both hearts and heads.

Materials:

  • Suggested yarn: Alize Burcum Classic, (100% acrylic, 3.5 oz (100 g), 230 yards (210 m), one skein each of White (55), Petrol (212), Orange (408), and Black (60), plus a few yards (meters) of Brown (493).
  • Circular knitting needles, 16" (40 cm) long, sizes US 7 (4.5 mm) and US 8 (5 mm).
  • Double pointed needles (DPNs) set, size US 8 (5 mm).
  • Tapestry needle.
  • Ring stitch marker.
Sizes and measurements:
  • 6-9 years: head circumference = 19.75" - 20.75" (50 - 53 cm).
  • 10-12 years: head circumference = 21.25" - 22" (54 - 56 cm). 


Gauge: 17 sts and 22 rounds = 4"x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch and US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles.

Yardage: 

  • 6-9 years131 - 133 yards (120 - 122 m), approx.
  • 10-12 years156 - 158 yards (143 - 145 m), approx.
Knitting Terms:
  • st: stitch.
  • sts: stitches.
  • k: knit.
  • p: purl.
  • ssk: slip stitch, slip stitch, then knit the two stitches together through back loops.




Instructions:

With white color yarn and circular knitting needles US 7 (4.5 mm), cast on 75 (90) sts. Join in the round. Don't know how to join in the round? here is a short tutorial on how to do it (from 0:26 - 1:15 min):

Put a ring stitch marker at the beginning of rounds, work as follows:

Rib round: k 2, p 1, repeat to end.

Repeat the rib round Eight more times. Knit one round while changing to circular knitting needles size US 8 (5 mm). 

Work the pattern by binding on the colored yarns. Cut off white, black and orange yarn. With petrol yarn, knit (9) rounds.



Decreasing Rounds:

Round 1: ssk, k 13 sts, repeat to end. [70 (84sts]

Round 2, 4, 6: k to end.

Round 3: ssk, k 12, repeat to end. [65 (78sts]

Round 5: ssk, k 11, repeat to end[60 (72sts]

Note: change to DPNs when needed.

For size 6-9 years:

Round 7: ssk, k 10, repeat to end. (55 sts)

Round 8: ssk, k 9, repeat to end. (50 sts)

Round 9: ssk, k 8, repeat to end. (45 sts)

Round 10: ssk, k 7, to last st. (40 sts)

Rounds 11-12: ssk to last st. (10 sts)

For size 10-12 years:

Round 7: ssk, k 10, repeat to end. (66 sts)

Round 8: k to end.

Round 9: ssk, k 9, repeat to end. (60 sts)

Round 10: ssk, k 8, repeat to end. (54 sts)

Round 11: ssk, k 7, repeat to end. (48 sts)

Round 12: ssk, k 6, repeat to end. (42 sts)

Round 13: ssk, k 5, repeat to end. (36 sts)

Rounds 14-15: ssk to end. (9 sts)

For all sizes: cut the yarn, leaving a 6" (15 cm) tail. Thread the tail through all stitches, pull tight to close, and secure. Weave in the loose ends.

Embroider the eyes and eyebrows. Add the hair strands and fasten them securely to the head of the snowman.

With orange yarn, make a 3" (7.5 cm) pom-pom and attach it securely to the top of the hat.

  • The sweater is a seamless, top-down project worked with circular knitting needles, starting from the middle of the back. The knitting begins at the double neck and progresses to the yoke, which is then divided into the body and sleeves. Both the body and sleeves are knit in the round, and using double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the sleeves can make the process easier.
  • Required skills: increasing and decreasing stitches, working in the round, knitting using double pointed knitting needles, stranded colorwork.

  • Circular knitting needles, 16" (40 cm) long, sizes US 2.5 (3 mm) and US 6 (4 mm).
  • Circular knitting needles, 24" (60 cm) long, sizes US 2.5 (3 mm) and US 6 (4 mm). 
  • Double pointed knitting needles (DPNs) sets, size US 6 (4 mm).
  • Ring stitch marker.
  • Regular stitch marker.
  • Tapestry needle.


Sizes and measurements:

Size Chest-bust measurements
S 33.5-35.5" (85-90 cm) 
M 37.5-40" (95-100 cm)
L 42-44" (105-110 cm)
XL 42"- 44" (107- 112 cm)
 XXL 46"- 48" (117- 122 cm)

Yardage: 

  • Size S: 1065-1070 yards (975-980 m), approx.
  • Size M: 1145- 1150 yards (1045- 1050 m), approx.
  • Size L: 1220- 1225 yards (1115- 1120 m), approx. 
  • Size XL: 1375- 1380 yards (1255- 1260 m), approx.
  • Size XXL: 1530- 1535 yards (1400- 1410 m), approx.




Gauge: 21 sts and 30 rounds = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch and US 6 (4 mm) needles.
 

Knitting terms:

  • st: stitch.
  • sts: stitches.
  • k: knit.
  • p: purl.
  • k2tog: knit 2 sts together.
  • ssk: slip, slip, knit the 2 sts together through back loops.
  • stm: stitch marker.




Instructions: 

Double neck:

With dark blue yarn and both US 2.5 (3 mm) and US 6 (4 mm) circular knitting needles, cast on 100 (106110, 114120) sts, (very stretchy and elastic cast on edge). Remove the US 6 (4 mm) circular knitting needles, join in round when working next step. Put a ring stm at the beginning of the round. Work as follows:

Rib round: k 1, p 1 to end.

Work rib round 25 more times. Fold the neck double to inside and work one more rib round working every second st together with its corresponding st on the cast on edge.

Yoke:

Change to 16" (40 cm) and size US 6 (4 mm) circular knitting needles when knitting the next round.

First increase round: 

Knit all sts, increasing 28 (3032, 36, 40) sts evenly spaced [128 (136142, 150160) sts]. Knit (33, 69) rounds. 

Second increase round: 

Knit all sts, increasing 27 (3438, 4555) sts evenly spaced [155 (170180, 195215) sts]Knit (33, 69) rounds. Bind on cream yarn and knit Pattern 1. Knit one round.  

Third increase round: 

Knit one round increasing 25 (2836, 3955) sts evenly spaced. [180 (198216, 234270) sts]. Bind on red yarn and work Pattern 2. Knit one round.

Fourth increase round: 

Knit one round increasing 40 (4239, 4645) sts evenly spaced. [220 (240255, 280315) sts]. Work Pattern 3. Knit (3366) rounds.

Fifth increase round: 

Knit one round increasing 32 (4033, 4445) sts evenly spaced. [252 (270288, 324360) sts]Work Pattern 4. Cut blue, red and beige yarn. 



Dividing round:

From the ring stitch marker, knit 38 (4043, 4754) sts for half back, place the next 50 (5457, 6772) sts on a piece of yarn for the sleeve. Cast on (88, 1212) sts for the underarm, knit 76 (8187, 95108) sts for the front and place the next 50 (5457, 6772) sts on a piece of yarn for the second sleeve. Cast on (88, 1212) sts for the underarm. Knit the last 38 (4144, 4854) sts for second half back. Now the body total sts are 168 (178190, 214240) stsBody and sleeves are finished separately. Put a regular stm at the middle of the back. The body piece is now measured from here.

Body:

knit (33, 66) rounds and increase knit (2010) sts in the last round [170 (180190, 215240) sts]. Bind on dark blue yarn and work pattern 5. Cut cream yarn.

Keep on knitting in rounds until the body measures 11.5" (11.5"11.5", 12"12") [29 (2929, 3030) cm] from the dividing round. Knit one round increasing 18 (1820, 2324) sts evenly spaced [188 (198210, 238264) sts]. 

Change to size US 2.5 (3 mm) circular knitting needles and work the rib round 19 times. Bind off all sts.

Sleeves: 

Slip the 50 (5457, 6772) sts into US 6 (4 mm) 16" (40 cm) circular knitting needles. Join cream yarn and knit them, then pick up one st out of each of the body underarm (88, 1212) sts. [58 (6465, 7984) sts]. Put a ring stm in the middle of the picked up sts to start knitting the sleeve. The sleeve is now measured from here.

Sleeve Shaping: 

knit 3 rounds and increase knit (10, 11) sts in the last round [60 (6565, 8085) sts]. Bind on dark blue yarn and work pattern 5. Cut cream yarn. Knit 2 rounds then start the decreasing pattern. 

Decreasing Pattern: knit the round, k2tog before stm and ssk after it. Knit 24 (2220, 1212) rounds.

Repeat decreasing pattern 4 (44, 99) more times [50 (5555, 6065) sts]. knit in the round until sleeve measures 15.5" (15.5"15", 13.5"13") [40 (4038, 3533) cm]. Knit one round increasing (13, 23) sts [52 (5658, 6268) sts]Change to size US 2.5 (3 mm) circular knitting needles and work the rib round 19 times. Bind off all sts. Work the other sleeve in the same way. Weave in loose ends.
