Medallion Skirt

Hi knitters everywhere! as promised, my second skirt design for the season is finally here! this time it's a maxi skirt, made with a mohair-looking yarn that I found and liked very much. It's super fluffy and smooth to the touch. This pattern should be a piece of cake to knit if you know how to knit, purl and make a stitch increase, because that's all there is to it. The instructions available are for sizes ranging from XS to 2XL just like my previous project. I added four loops to the waist so you can wear the skirt with a belt, a necessity for such a long and somewhat heavy knitted garment. Let me know what you think, and I hope you enjoy making this really simple yet elegant skirt.

Knitting Terms:

  • st: stitch.
  • sts: stitches.
  • k: knit.
  • p: purl.
  • m1: make one stitch increase.
  • p2tog: purl two stitches together.

Instructions:

With US 6 (4 mm) circular knitting needles, cast on 168 (180192204216240) sts. Join in the round. Don't know how to join in the round? here is a short tutorial on how to do it (from 0:26 - 1:15 min):

Put a ring stitch marker at the beginning of rounds. Work as follows:

Rib round: k 1, p 1, repeat to end.

Repeat the rib round thirteen more times. Change to US 8 (5 mm) while working next round:

Basic round: k 6, p 6, repeat to last 12 sts, k 6, p 4, p2tog, slip the st marker and p 1. [167 (179191203215239) sts]

Note: since we did p2tog in the basic round, there won't be an end to the next round after it, which is worked as follows:

(k 6, p 6) repeatedly and just slip the ring stitch marker whenever you reach it. Stop once the skirt measures 6" (6"6"6"8"8") [15 (1515152020) cm] and end the round with p 5 before the st marker, m1 purl-wise. [168 (180192204216240) sts]

Increase round 1: m1 knit-wise, k 6, m1 knit-wise, p 6, repeat to end.

Basic round 2: k the knit sts and p the purled sts.

Repeat basic round 2 eleven more times.

Note: starting from here, do m1 purl-wise. Choose any increase method you prefer.

Increase round 2: k 8, m1, p 6, repeat to end.

Repeat basic round 2 twelve times.

Increase round 3: k 8,  p 7, m1, repeat to end.

Repeat basic round 2 twelve times.

Increase round 4: k 8, m1, p 8, repeat to end.

Increase round 10: k 8, m1, p 14, repeat to end.

Repeat basic round 2 ten times.

Rib round: [k 3, p 2, k 3, (p 3, k 2) three times, p 3] repeat to end.

Repeat the rib round five more times, cast off all sts, weave in loose ends.

Belt loops (make four):

With circular knitting needles size US 6 (4 mm) (or you can use a couple of double pointed needles if you prefer), cast on 5 sts leaving out a 4" (10 cm) yarn tail at the beginning for sewing the loop in place, work as follows:

Rib row 1: k 1, p 1, to last st, k 1.

Rib row 2: p 1, k 1, to last st, p 1.

Repeat these two rows alternately eight more times. Cast off all sts. Leaving out a a short yarn tail to mark the middle back point of the skirt's waist band.

Lay down the skirt on a flat surface, with the middle back point facing you. Place one stitch marker 3.5" (4"4.25"4.75"5"6") [9 (1011121315) cm] on each side from the middle back. Repeat the same for the middle front. Sew the belt loops to the waist band on the marked points.
