Hi everyone, and Happy New Year! knitting
with cotton yarn can be a challenge since it lacks elasticity a little bit.
When I ordered Paintbox yarn, I was eager to get my hand on this beautiful yarn
pack I found online, a palette of four colors. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize
that the yarn I purchased was made from cotton, so It took me a while to figure
out what it would be suitable for. I finally decided to turn this yarn into a
spring jacket. First, I decided that this palette needed a primary color added
to it for my new project, and black yarn seemed to be the right choice, from
there I got to work on the design.
As my followers know, I'm an old fan of mosaic patterns, so I
chose the hashtag pattern for my jacket. I think it’s both beautiful and intricate
looking. I am very satisfied with the final product, and I think it would be a
wonderful piece to wear next spring. When writing the instructions, I've tried
to make them as clear and simple as possible, so I hope you have fun making
this jacket. I also made a matching slouchy from the remaining yarn, which I
will post later. Another surprise accessory is still in the making, so stay
tuned. January 22nd, 2021 update: I've posted the matching slouchy and mittens. Click on the links below to check it out!
Stay safe and healthy my fellow knitters and crocheters, and
I hope you have a wonderful new year!

Pattern once in first 38(42-46) sts.
Repeat the 24 rows of the Hashtag Pattern

(30 cm) of yarn to sew the shoulder seams.
Sleeves:
Notes:
- When knitting the colored
stripes on the RS, knit the first stitch using the black yarn together with the
colored one to keep it coming up and, so you don't have to cut and bind it when
knitting every black yarn stripe.
- After finishing
every colored stripe, cut the yarn, leaving 4" (10 cm) of yarn to
sew the seam of each stripe with its own color.
With black yarn and 4 mm needles, cast on 48(52-52) sts. work as follows:
Ribs Row: k 3, *p 2, k 2, repeat from * to last 3 sts, p 3.
Repeat ribs row 17 times. Change to 4.5 mm
needles and knit 1(3-3) row(s).
Stripes pattern:

work next 2 rows as follows:
Row 1: (k 1, p 1) into the first st, k to last st, (k 1, p
1) into the last st.
Row 2: k to end.
With B yarn knit eight rows, with black
yarn repeat the increasing rows.
With C yarn knit eight rows, with
black yarn repeat the increasing rows.
With D yarn knit eight rows, with
black yarn repeat the increasing rows.
Repeat the stripes pattern 3 times, but don't
increase in last rows knitted with black yarn. Instead, knit 2(4-4) rows.
Bind off all sts using stretchy method, leaving 18" (45 cm) of yarn for sewing the sleeve in place.
Assembly:
Sew shoulders seams. Sew side seams of sleeves
leaving the upper color stripe to sew with the body underarm. Sew sleeve with
sleeve opening in body piece.
Hood:
From RS with black yarn and 4.5 mm circular
needles, pick up 26(29-32) sts from right side neck, 31(37,43) sts from back neck and 26(29-32) sts from left side neck. 83(95-107) sts
Knit next row as follows:
Increase Row: k 2(3-4) sts, *m 1, k 5,
repeat to last 1(2-3) sts, m 1, k to end. 100(114-128) sts
Knit until the hood measures 12(13-13)" [30(3-33) cm] from increase row.
Fold the hood double and sew together at the
top, I've used Kitchener sewing method to get a neat look.
Right front Band:
From RS and with black yarn and 4 mm needles,
pick up 18(20-20) sts from bottom black stripe, 18 sts from each hashtag pattern
stripe, 2 sts before first hood row.

pick up 2 sts under first hood row, 18 sts from each hashtag
pattern stripe, and 18(20-20) sts from bottom black stripe.
Ribs Row: k 2, p 2 to 0(2-2) sts, k 2.
Repeat ribs row 7 times. Bind off all sts.
Weave in loose ends. Sew buttons in place (as you can see in the image below, I used the colored yarn to sew them).
Thank you very much for the pattern. I think this is something that my teenage granddaughters will really like. It is very kind of you to make it a free pattern. I look forward to the slouchy hat too.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome Joy, my greetings to your granddaughters.

This is a most beautiful pattern. I thin I will make it for my daughter for Christmas this year. Thank you so much for sharing and making this a free pattern.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your lovely comment. Looking eagerly to see your jacket before next Christmas I hope.

Can you confirm please if I should buy the yarn in double knit or Aran weight?
ReplyDeleteHi Cassie, I've used PAINTBOX Cotton Aran.
DeleteAlso I can't find the nako Calico yarn. Could you suggest an alternative please or should I use the same paintbox yarn as the rest of the garment but in black?
ReplyDeleteYes, certainly you can.
DeletePlease could you verify what colour to use for each even numbered row. Do I use the same colour as using for the odd number row I have just completed or do I always use the contrast colour?
ReplyDeleteEg: row 4 . Do I use black or A?
Hi cassie
DeleteIf you notice rows 1 and 2 are worked using color (A), so rows 3 and 4 are worked with color (black) and so on. Each odd and even numbered rows are worked with the same color.
Stay safe and healthy and have a nice knitting day.
Thank you so much for your help
ReplyDeleteHello again. I think you have a fault on the pattern.
ReplyDeleteRow 5 - sl1 k1 to the end denotes an even number of stitches but all sizes have an odd number eg small size has 183 sts. I'm left with an odd stitch at the end of the row.
Can you help please.
Thank you again Cassie, the mistake has been corrected.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day
Oh no. Now I have to undo the whole row.
ReplyDeleteHello again. Sorry to be such a pain. Can you explain please row 13 begins sk1. There is no explanation in the knitting terms. I am assuming it means skip 1 stitch?
ReplyDeleteHello Cassie. A Big Thanks, such a light soul you have. Please never feel or say sorry because you are pointing out mistakes, I read and read my posts but I never see them.
DeleteHave a nice day
So what is the answer? How do I begin the row?
ReplyDeleteCould you also explain. If the odd number rows include knit stitches and the even number rows have purl stitches, this becomes stocking stitch. But your hashtag knitting appears to be worked in garter stitch?
ReplyDeleteOK Cassie, you are the design tester. So far all are corrected, go back and check.
DeleteThank you. I will start again. Better luck this time I hope. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI had asked if there was a way to print the sweater pattern? I like a paper copy to make notes etc..
ReplyDeleteHi Susanne
DeleteI have Etsy store that I post PDF version of my designs. In a few days I'll inform you that this Jacket's PDF is available.
