Christmas Snow Shawl

Hello friends! In a few days, we'll be saying goodbye to 2020, which was a roller-coaster of a year. For me, it pushed my work towards limitless horizons. In addition to designing, I went back to my old posts and reviewed them, in response to many of you who pointed out mistakes, or gave suggestions to improve the quality of the instructions, so thank you all so much.

For this shawl I used the mosaic pattern, which I first saw on Pinterest a couple of years ago. I really liked it and worked hard to learn how to knit it. You can see my previous pieces like Candy Cane BeanieParachutes Cowl and Christmas Lights Hat and observe my journey to decipher and tame this technique to make my own unique patterns. As for the yarn, I had an old scarf I've made for Christmas that badly needed an update, and when I gave it a second glance I decided that there was no saving it, so I undid it and used the yarn to make this shawl. As you can see in the images, this piece features three types of snowflakes falling over a row of Christmas trees. I tried many versions of this shawl until I was satisfied, and I really like this final result, it's very beautiful and you just want to follow the snow with your eyes as it falls down. I hope you give it a try and make it for yourself or your loved ones.

Let us look forward to the new year and try harder to make it better. May your wishes be achieved in the best way. With my last post for 2020, I wish you all a healthy and safe 2021. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  2. just a heads up, but I think there's a bit of an error in your pattern....

it says "Row 2: k2, m1, k to last 2 sts, k2togtbl. (one stitch increase)"
but that k2togtbl would cancel out the m1 so that there actually isn't an increase in stitches.
and it looks like that error is repeated throughout the pattern instructions.

also, just as a general request: you don't happen to have your mosaic instructions charted out do you? it's the way Barbara Walker presented hers in her pattern books, and how I learned, and I find it about 1000x easier to work that way.

    1. A little off-topic but I just found your post pattern on Ravulous Hot Right Now and it led me to your blog. I just wanted you to know that the simple words of the last paragraph of your post both blessed and inspired me. I also think your pattern is just beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

  3. This is beautiful! The downside is, I can't knit. I have tried knitting before, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it. Would you happen to know if there is a crochet version out there? Thank you for sharing this beautiful work of art with us!

    1. Hi Penny, thank you so much, and I really wish you could knit so that you can make this shawl. I am sorry to tell you that this is my design that I've inspired from "Knitting Mosaic Patterns" method. You can search for "Crochet Mosaic Patterns", they are very lovely and definitely have tree and snow flakes patterns. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  4. Hi there. I love this pattern but I have started knitting it and have ripped it apart 5 times and it still is not working. Here is a picture of the shape I keep getting. I’m thinking my error is at the very beginning with the 2 rows of the General Pattern until there are 50 stitches. Please, please help me!!!!!!!!! I guess I can’t attach the picture but would appreciate your help. Thank you!

  5. I just starting this pattern and was wondering - in the General Pattern section row 1, you say slip first stitch purlwise but is that with yarn in front or yarn in back? Then on row 2 is that a M1R or M1L?

  6. Under the first Dotted Snowflakes Pattern section (after you have 50 stitches) it says Bind white yarn, work next 2 rows. What does bind white yarn mean and are you knitting this with the red or white yarn?

    1. Hello there,
At the stage you mention you're supposed to start knitting using white yarn, so you join (or bind) the aforementioned yarn to the red yarn and knit the next two rows using it. I've updated the written instructions slightly so that it's more clear when you're supposed to switch between the yarn colors.

    1. Hi Susan,
This is a "mosaic pattern" worked with white and red yarn, so when you slip stitch in one color's section, the other color appears. I have recently tested the pattern so you can go ahead and start. Let me know if you have any other questions.
