Candy Corn Sweater

I've wanted to work on a Halloween-themed project for the last three years, but every time I find my self swarmed with work, and I miss the opportunity to work on something. So this year, I've decided to start two months ahead, because I'm slow when it comes to creating a design I am satisfied with.
This fluffy sweater features a cute candy corn pattern, is sure to keep a kid warm while trick-or-treating, and comes in 4 sizes. I hope you have enough time to finish knitting it for your beloved little ones.

Notes:

  • The instructions are written for the smallest size. Instructions for the larger sizes will be written between parentheses "( )".
  • When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.
  • When working from chart, carry yarn not in use loosely across wrong side of work, but never over more than 5 sts. When it must pass over more than 5 sts, weave it over and under color in use on next st, or at center point of the sts it passes over.

Body:
With black color and 4 mm circular needles, cast on 104 (120, 136, 152) sts, join in round,
Don't know how to join in the round? here is a short tutorial on how to do it (from 0:26 - 1:15 min):

Knit one round. Put a ring stitch marker at the beginning of rounds.

Work 10 rounds with (k2, p2 pattern). change to 5 mm circular needles, knit one round. Increase in next round:

Increase round: *k 13 (15, 17, 19), m1, repeat from * to end of round. 112 (128, 144, 160) sts.

Work the candy corn chart 1 right to left, repeat 7 (8, 9, 10)

Cut black, white and light yellow yarns. With yellow, knit rounds till the body measures 11" (12.5", 14", 15").

Sleeves (make two):
With black color and 4 mm dpn, cast on 32 (40, 40, 40) sts, join in round, knit one round. put a ring stitch marker at the beginning of rounds.

Work 10 rounds with (k2, p2 pattern). change to 5 mm dpn. knit one round.

Increase round: *k 8 (5, 5, 5) m1, repeat from * to end of round. 36 (48, 48, 48) sts.

Work the candy corn chart 2. work the pattern from right to left, repeat 3 (4, 4, 4)

Cut black, white and light yellow yarns. With yellow, knit one round.

Sleeve shaping rounds: m1 , k 1, m 1, k to end of round, *knit 4 (4, 5, 6) rounds. repeat the increase round.

Repeat from * 9 (8, 8, 11) times, then knit till the sleeve measures 10" (11", 12.5", 13.2"). 54 (64, 64, 70) sts

Yoke:
Prepare body and sleeves for yoke work, using the large and long circular needles:

Body: k 4 (5, 5, 5) sts, slip these sts and 4 (5, 5, 5) sts of the previous round onto a stitch holder or through piece of yarn and tie it well, k 48 (54, 62, 70) sts.

Sleeve: k 4 (5, 5, 5) sts, slip these sts and 4 (5, 5, 5) sts of the previous round onto a stitch holder or through piece of yarn and tie it well, k remaining 46 (54, 54, 60) sts onto the same needles with the body.

Repeat for the rest of body and second sleeve.

Now you have 194 (216, 228, 240) sts on the needles.
Don't forget to put the ring st marker between the start and end of rounds, which is at the beginning of back body.

Size 4: knit one round and decrease 2 sts evenly. (192 sts)

Start working the yoke:

Knit 0 (3, 5, 5) rounds, work the candy corn chart 3,
work the chart from right to left, repeat 16 (18, 19, 20) times. 176 (198, 209, 220) sts.

With black yarn knit 2 rounds, knit the next round with decreasing 8 (18, 17, 16) sts evenly. 168 (180, 192, 204) sts.
with yellow yarn knit 3 rounds, with black yarn knit 3 rounds.
work chart 4, work the chart from right to left, repeat 14 (15, 16, 17) times. 112 (120, 128, 136) sts.

Next round: *k 1, k2tog, repeat from * to last 1 (0, 2, 1), k to end of round.

With smaller circular needles, knit one round, work 10 rounds (k 2, p 2) pattern.
Bind off using stretchy method, You can watch my tutorial video for the stretchy bind off method here:

Graft underarm sts. Weave in loose ends. Block if needed,

  1. HI! I love this pattern and it's absolutely adorable.

I know it's written for kid's sizes but I'd love to make one for myself. Is there a way to modify the pattern for an adult? If not I completely understand.

Thank you for your time and help!!

    1. Hi,
Thank you for the nice comment. Sure there is a way to modify the pattern. The most important thing is to add stitches to make complete candy corn pattern repetitions around waist, arms and bust.
You inspired me to think a bout posting such an adult size pattern, but time is not enough, may be in near future.
      Stay safe and healthy.

  2. Only thing I will say is that there are a few mistakes in the pattern, but as an experienced knitter had no problem adjusting the pattern.

  3. Hi Wiam, when you start the yoke, do you do 5 rounds (third size) and then start chart three?

I also found some errors with the numbers, from here:

    Increase round: *k 8 (5, 5, 5) m1, repeat from * to end of round. 36 (48, 48, 48) sts.

Work the candy corn chart 2. work the pattern from right to left, repeat 3 (4, 4, 4)

Cut black, white and light yellow yarns. With yellow, knit one round.

    Sleeve shaping rounds: m1 , k 1, m 1, k to end of round,{48 + 2 = 50} *knit 4 (4, 5, 6) rounds. repeat the increase round. {52 stitches}

    Repeat from * 9 (8, 8, 11) times, then knit till the sleeve measures 10" (11", 12.5", 13.2"). 54 (64, 64, 70) sts {52 + 2 x 8 = 52 + 16 = 68 stitches, not 64}

This transposes to the full round, meaning there are too many stitches. Unless I am reading this incorrectly...
