Hello everyone! It's not usual for me to knit for Valentine’s Day, but I got inspired this year, and thought, why not make a heart themed item that can be a quick gift for a loved one. So, this beret is what I bring you for this year's Valentine’s. I’ve knitted two versions with different yarn weights, as you will see in the rest of this post. For version A, I worked with worsted yarn and used 5 and 6 mm needles, which produced a hat that turned out very big with a loose fit. As for version B I switched to a multi colored, sport weight yarn, which I knitted using 4 and 4.5 mm needles. The resulting hat was more fitted this time. I personally think that both versions have their own charm, so it is up to you to decide which one to make based on what fit you prefer. Hope you all have a love filled Valentine’s Day!

Instructions:
Notes for version B:
- Use knitting needles size US 6 (4 mm) when you cast on, then switch to size US 8 (5 mm) when the instructions say to.
- To get Version B in the measurements I specified in the measurements section, work the pattern by following the red numbers written between (). If you work following the black numbers, you will get a smaller sized hat for which measurements are not yet determined, because I have not tested it.
With white yarn and size US 8 (5 mm) circular knitting needles, cast on 75 (84) sts. Join in the round. Don't know how to join in the round? here is a short tutorial on how to do it (from 0:26 - 1:15 min):
Put a ring stitch marker at the beginning of rounds, then work as follows:
Rib round: k 2, p 1, repeat to end.
Repeat the rib round 5 times. Switch to size US 10 (6 mm) circular knitting needles, knit 1 (2) round(s), then work as follows:
First increasing round: k 3 (4), m 1, repeat to end. 100 (105) sts
Knit 1 (2) round(s), then work as follows:
Second increasing round: k 5 (7), m 1, repeat to end. (120 sts)
Knit 1 (2) round(s). Bind the red yarn, then work according to the chart below. Cut red yarn and knit 1 (2) round(s).
Decreasing pattern:
Decreasing round 1: k 4, k2tog, repeat to end. (100 sts)
Knit 4 rounds.
Decreasing round 2: k 3, k2tog, repeat to end. (80 sts)
Knit 3 rounds.
Decreasing round 3: k 2, k2tog, repeat to end. (60 sts)
Knit 2 rounds.
Decreasing round 4: k 2, k2tog, repeat to end. (45 sts)
Knit 2 round.
Decreasing round 5: k 1, k2tog, repeat to end. (30 sts)
Knit 1 round.
Decreasing round 6: k 1, k2tog, repeat to end. (20 sts)
Knit 1 round.
Decreasing round 7: k2tog, repeat to end. (10 sts)
Cut yarn, leaving a 6" (15 cm) long yarn tail, pull it through all sts and tighten tog. Weave in loose ends.

Reading the instructions, you say to cast on using 4mm needle then swap as instructed but then you say cast on using 5mm. Also, further on you say to swap to 6mm. Please clarify if to cast on with 4 or 5mm and then to swap to 5 or 6mm. Thank you
ReplyDeleteHello there!, Thank you for choosing one of my designs. I have made two versions of this hat; version A that I've used larger needles (5 and 6 mm), and Version B with (4 and 5 mm). The latter hat looks tighter. So you can choose which set of needles to work with for your own personal taste. Have a nice day!
DeletePlease confirm if we’re to cast on using 4 or 5mm and then swap to 5 or 6mm. Thank you
