Materials:
  • Yarn: any cotton yarn you prefer (weight: #3/ light/ DK), one skein in each of the following colors: green, red and white. Suggested yarn: D.M.C Happy Cotton, 0.7 oz (20 g), 47 yards (43 m).
  • Crochet hook, size E (3.5 mm).
  • Fifteen round beads, 1/4 inch (5 mm) in diameter, and one star bead for the tree. The beads I had were black, so I painted them with gold nail polish.
  • One mini white pompom: I tried making one with cotton yarn, but it turned out very stiff and not fluffy. So I remade it using a 75% acrylic, 25% wool yarn following this easy video tutorial. Use a 6" (15 cm) long piece of yarn to tie the pompom but do not cut the excess.
  • Tapestry needle.

Measurements of the square: 6" x 6" (15 cm x 15 cm) approx.

Gauge22 sts and 12 round = 4"x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in double crochet.

Yardage: 70- 72 yards (64- 66 m).

Crochet terms (US):
  • ch: chain.
  • st: stitch.
  • sl st: slip stitch.
  • yo: yarn over.
  • sc: single crochet.
  • dc: double crochet.

Instructions:

Note: leave a 3" (8 cm) yarn tail at the beginning of the hat and tree triangles.

  3. For the tree, if you changed up the beads for French knots, it would make a beautiful potholder or hot pad. For the hat I would crochet a mini circle instead of the pom pom to make another pot holder or hot pad. Then they would make a beautiful Christmas gift for the Mom that has everything!
