The Year of The Chicken Granny Square

Happy new year! According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2017 is the year of the chicken. So to celebrate the start of the year, I made a chicken granny square. It can work as a dish cloth, or you can make many squares and join them to make a blanket. I had so much fun crocheting it that I decide to try to make other animals. I'm currently working on a dog granny square. I'll be sharing it with you soon.

Measurements of the square: approx. 15.5 cm X 15.5 cm / 6.1 inch X 6.1 inch.

I used Kartopu Bebe yarn 100 % acrylic (50 g / 150 mt) in colors K019, K322, K331, K150, with a hook size 4.5 mm.

The tutorial is written in American Terminology.

Abbreviations:
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
tc: treble crochet
st: stitch
sl st: slip stitch.

Special stitches used:
Standing double crochet.

NOTE: leave approx. 5 cm / 2 inch of yarn in the beginning, we'll use it to anchor the combs to the square.

With the red yarn ch 4

Row 1: in the 4th ch from the hook make 3 dcs, ch 3 (count as a dc). This is the right side of the comb.Turn.

Row 2: dc into the same st, 2 dcs into each st, ch 3, turn.

Joining the combs:

Insert the yarn left at the beginning of each comb, using a needle, into the sts marked in the picture, (the upper st for the larger comb, and the lower one for the smaller comb). Weave in the loose ends in the back.

Using the needle and the red yarn sew the combs into the square to make them more secure.
